Behind the designation for the RAL colour 4004 is an intense, beautiful sight. “Claret violet” belongs to the violet tones and, after “Purple violet”, is the darkest hue of this RAL colour group. The shade belongs to the RAL Classic colours and was therefore already represented in the initial list of the RAL Institute. RAL 4004 is popular in interior design or as a colour accent for e.g. front doors. “Claret violet” is probably most well-known for its use millions of times at airports and borders all over the world. With a few exceptions, all EU countries, including Germany, have designed the cover of their passports in this colour. The European Union agreed on this uniform colour scheme in 1981 in order to give the nationals of the member states a stronger feeling of belonging to one and the same community. From 1988 onwards, the project was implemented by printing the claret violet passport covers.
